Skating Programs
(Last
updated 10-03-08)
The Lake Region Figure Skating Club (LRFSC) offers a wide
range of skating opportunities. We are happy to be able to say that
although our ice time per year is limited, we are offering all of
the areas available through the United States Figure Skating
Association (USFSA). Our club offers a basic skills program for
beginners, the "national" USFSA testing for advanced skaters in
dance, freestyle and moves in the field; and the basic skills for
the Synchro Teams. As a result, our skaters participate in local and
international competitions. These competitors can perform
individually or in large groups such as a Snychro team. USFSA
testing, when completed to a high enough level, can lead to our
skaters becoming qualified to someday coach skating. It pleases us
to know that some of our skaters have done just that and we hope to
continue to broaden and expand our program to meet the needs of
future skaters. We have a Competitors Exhibition and this year we
added a Christmas Show. Our annual spring Ice Show continues to be
the highlight of our skating season. Our skating programs are held
at the Burdick Arena in Devils Lake, ND.
Family
Skating
The Lake Region Figure Skating Club
exists to enhance and promote family skating. Family skating
provides an opportunity for parents and children to skate together
at their leisure. Family skating is offered twice a week on
Wednesdays and Sundays. Group lessons in Basic Skills are
given during this time. There will be an ice monitor present at each
family skating session to ensure that rules are followed so everyone
can enjoy a safer family session. Following your registration
for membership, a schedule of what time each group lesson begins
will be posted in the arena.
Family skating times on Sunday
vary from week to week due to hockey and public skating schedules,
but normally is from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. This will not affect the order
in which lessons are given, just the time each class starts. A
printed schedule for each week is put out by the Park Board staff
and is located near the door leading to the ice. You may also
call the Burdick Arena schedule information number at (701)

Private
Lessons
Skaters arrange with the coach to take private
lessons. Any club member may take private lessons after paying the
AM/PM Ice Fee. This is a time for skaters to practice
moves-in-the-field, freestyle and dance. These lessons prepare
skaters for competitions and testing. Taking private lessons does
not always mean that you are at a level where you must compete or
test through the USFSA. Sometimes a private lesson or two can help a
Basic Skills skater pass a level sooner or serve as an added help on
any skill a skater may want to improve.
Private Ice Time Rules.
1. Please treat all skaters how you would like
to be treated. Skaters in a lesson have the first priority. Skaters
doing their program have the second priority.
2. No more than 2 skaters are allowed in the
music box at one time.
3. Please sign in and out during your skating
sessions.
4. Please do not interrupt the coaches during a
lesson. If it is important, please address in between lessons,
otherwise, wait until after the skating session.
5. If you are having a problem with another
skater, please let one of the coaches know immediately.
6. Do not stand around and talk. Each skater or
skaters will get 1 warning during the skating session and any other
time a coach needs to address the situation the skater or skaters
will be asked to leave.
Synchronized

The criteria
for being on a competitive Synchronized Team is as follows:

or group activities captains voices are the only ones the team
should hear. If others are speaking they will be addressed on a case
to case basis. 4. If you have a comment, question, or concern please
address it immediately , do not let it wait until a later date.
Synchro Class
This
class is for beginning Synchro skaters to learn the elements of a
Synchro team before competing. Synchro class is a requirement before
a skater may try out for a competing Synchro team. Any skater who is
a level Basic 4 and higher may partake in this class. This is a year
long class with a performance in the ice show. This class will be
available, depending upon participants. Dance class is not mandatory
at this level.
Dance Class
Dance
will be offered by the coaching staff to all new dancers at a cost
in addition to regular membership. All synchro skaters are required
to take dance class unless they are in the bronze dance
category or above. Bronze and above skaters are required to take
private dance lessons.
Power Class
Power
is a mandatory part of any competing Synchro team. Skaters learn
stroking techniques as well as working on their stamina, endurance
and strength. There is High Power for older and Low Power for the
young competitors.

USFSA Testing
Competitions
When you choose to enroll
your family in the Lake Region Figure Skating
Club, we offer you the USFSA program of Basic
Skills, which is taught during family skating
time. The curriculum in this program will
teach any age person how to use skates to
accomplish basic fundamentals of skating. When a
skater reaches the upper levels of this program
they often want more from this enjoyable
sport.
When you choose to enter
this competitive phase of skating, the amount of
time and money you invest increases, but the
rewards can be great. Additional costs include
private lessons and entry fees in competitions, as
well as more time spent on the ice and
traveling.
Our skaters, if they
choose to do so, have a chance to compete and test
their skills against skaters with similar skill
levels from around the state and region. Skaters
begin the path to competition by taking private
lessons. These lessons prepare the skaters for
competitons and testing.
The United States Figure
Skating Association (USFSA) is the governing body
for figure skating on ice in the United
States. It is responsible for making and
enforcing rules for the sport, holding
competitions and official tests (NOT basic skills
testing). The Lake Region Skating Club is a member
club in the USFSA and is listed in the
rulebook.
Competition is open to
skaters in the United States and Canada and
includes the popular Maneuver Team event. This
event is usually the first type of competitive
event a skater tries because it allows the skater
to be a part of a team of four where each skater
performs one move. This is an excellent way
to test the waters of competition.
You will have many
questions as you enter this phase of
skating. The best way to stay informed is to
ask parents and skaters who have experience in
this field.
For further information
throughout the year, check the newsletter for
upcoming meetings, events and forms. If you
have any questions or concerns, contact the
skating coach or any board member.
The Endowment
Fund
The endowment fund was set up to guarantee the Lake Region
Figure Skating Club the financial means to support a
professional instructor for the club. The club receives
only the interest from this fund therefore, as the fund
continues to grow, the club benefits increase. If you
make a donation to the endowment fund, you will be presented
with a badge for you and your spouse. For more information,
e-mail the club.
Your contribution will help shape the
future of the
Lake Region Figure Skating Club!
